The decision to send Leopard tanks had hardly been celebrated and described as “historic” when orders for fighter planes, long-range missiles, warships and submarines arrived, and the news was left behind and relativized. The calls for help, as dramatic as they were understandable, from a Ukraine attacked in violation of international law found the echo in the West that was expected. The only new thing here was the acceleration of the well-known game of morally outraged appeals to supply more powerful weapons, and then, not without hesitation, to update the promised weapon models again and again.
It was also heard from within the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) that there India Email List no "red lines." With the exceptions of the Federal Chancellor and his entourage, the pleas of the Lithuanian Foreign Minister were taken seriously by the government, political parties and the press almost unanimously: "We must overcome the fear of wanting to defeat Russia." From the uncertain perspective of a "victory", which can mean anything, any incidental discussion about the objective of our military support – and about the ways to achieve it – must be resolved.
Thus, the rearmament process seems to be taking on its own dynamic that, although initiated by understandable pressure from the Ukrainian government, It is driven among us by the bellicose tenor of a concentrated public opinion in which the doubt and reflection of half of the German population are not expressed. Or is it not quite so? Meanwhile, thoughtful voices appear that not only defend the chancellor's position, but also urge public reflection on the arduous path of negotiations.
